WHAT IS LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY?
In simple terms, Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) stimulates body cells by providing them with light energy to enhance natural healing. For this reason, it is also classed as PhotoBioModulation, or even Cold Laser Therapy.
The laser allows us to control light wavelengths and energy density being provided to the cells to assist with specific physiological processes. There are numerous well researched, and effective protocols available for certain conditions, with evidence on the benefits of LLLT increasing year on year.
LLLT can be used to treat a wide variety of problems, from acute injuries to chronic conditions. In addition, inflammation is reduced as part of the natural healing process, ensuring the problem is addressed, rather than the symptoms as NSAID’s tend to do.
There is no thermal reaction in the cells with LLLT, unlike other forms of laser, making it an extremely safe method of electrotherapy. The scientific documentation of laser therapy in animal models is extensive, and there is a wealth of research on the physiological effects of LLLT using Class 3B lasers, such as the Omega System used in Aceso Animal Therapy’s practice.
HOW LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY MAY HELP
LLLT is quick, painless, non-invasive, and can be used effectively alongside complementary therapies, such as McTimoney Chiropractic treatment. As it is also drug-free, LLLT can be used in instances where drugs are contraindicated, where the individual is drug-resistant, or even during competitions when it remains legal, safe, and effective.
LLLT can achieve excellent results with a wide range of conditions such as:
- Acute inflammation (reduction of oedema, promotion of tissue permeability)
- Treatment of open wounds and ulcers (including wound margins and wound beds) and infection control
- Treatment of acupressure points, trigger points and muscle spasm
- Arthritic conditions and degenerative disorders
- Musculoskeletal disorders (ligament or tendon strain; bursal enlargements; neuralgic pain; acute or chronic muscular conditions)
- Fracture repair
- Splints, spavins and capped hocks
- Hoof abscesses, laminitis, bruised soles and corns
- Post surgical healing; LLLT is usable over pins and plates, with research showing its positive effects on the re-growth of bone, nerve, and soft tissue
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING TREATMENT?
LLLT treatment with Aceso Animal Therapy is applied via probes, with both an 820nm 200mW single probe, and a 20-cluster LED probe available depending on the treatment required. Each probe is cleaned with anti-bacterial wipes before and after treatment, with an additional barrier method utilised during treatment (application of clear film) to further reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
LLLT is well accepted by patients, with animals often visibly relaxing during the treatment process, as a result of both reduced pain through nociceptor modulation, and increased endorphin release.
