WHAT IS MCTIMONEY CHIROPRACTIC?
The McTimoney technique is a holistic, non-invasive, whole body approach to treating musculoskeletal issues through the quick and light adjustment of bones. This specific chiropractic technique was first developed for humans by John McTimoney, and was later adapted for animals in the 1950s, as animals can suffer from musculoskeletal problems and misalignments, leading to pain and poor performance. The aim of McTimoney is to correct any subtle misalignments of the bones, in turn restoring correct nerve function, promoting self-healing and rebalancing the musculoskeletal system.
When we talk about McTimoney treatments we normally focus on misalignments of the spine, this is such an important topic as the spinal cord runs through the spinal vertebrae, with nerves branching out between the vertebrae. Therefore, a misalignment of the spine can cause impingement of the nerves – which can in turn lead to a wide range of problems such as reduced muscle function, increased muscle tension, or a reduced nerve and blood supply. This may result in imbalances within the body, leading to pain, discomfort and a tendency to compensate and overuse other muscles.
HOW A MCTIMONEY ANIMAL PRACTITIONER MAY HELP
Chiropractic treatment can greatly benefit the animal’s health and well-being due to this techniques ‘whole-body approach’ to musculoskeletal issues. Improvements in musculoskeletal issues can also result in increased performance parameters, a benefit for any animal athlete (and their owner!). However, it is not only animal athletes who can benefit from this treatment – animals from a variety of lifestyles, working backgrounds and disciplines will find great comfort in the pain relief that the McTimoney technique can provide.
Just a selection of common issues a McTimoney Animal Practitioner may help resolve:
- restricted joint motion
- generalised anxious behaviour
- reluctance to work
- loss of performance
- postural issues due to external factors (i.e., ill-fitting saddle)
WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?
The benefits that McTimoney chiropractic treatments have are varied between each individual animal, however some common benefits seen are; increased ROM, improved coordination and quicker recovery post exercise. McTimoney also enhances the natural, equal balance of the body, which is why regular chiropractic treatment is so beneficial to the animal, in both the short and long term.
During the session you may be able to see real-time results; how your horse reacts, immediate positive responses and relaxation behaviour shown. Or results may be seen after the session, such as; improved performance, improved behaviour or a generally happier and more comfortable animal.
